Most Beetles have two pairs of wings, the front pair is hardened and thickened in to a shell like protection for the rear wings. The diversity of beetles is very wide. They are found in all major habitats, except marine and the polar regions. Similar to butterflies they go from Larvae, pupa and then to an adult stage. Beetles and their larvae have a variety of strategies to avoid being attacked by predators. These include camouflage, mimicry, toxicity, and active defense. Camouflage involves the use of coloration or shape to blend into the surrounding environment.Another defense that often uses color or shape to deceive potential enemies is mimicry. A number of longhorn beetles bear a striking resemblance to wasps, which helps them avoid being eaten.Chemical defense is another important defense found amongst species of beetles, usually displaying bright colors. Some popular species of beetles are the following:-
- Violin Beetle :- This insects body is shaped like the musical instrument from which it got its name.
- Diving Beetle :- When in water, these beetles breathe air stored under their wing cases.
- Gold Beetle :- The glinting shine often confuses predators in the dark forests in which the gold beetle lives.
- Tortoise Beetle:- Its body is covered by a shell like "shell".
- Dung Beetle:- They roll dung in to a ball and carry along with them.
- Great Diving Beetle:- When in water, these breathe air stored under their wing cases.
- Devils Coach Horse :- This can run fast and gets its name from its speed and an Irish myth which it was believed to be the devil in disguise, out to eat sinners.
- Sexton Beetle :- Using its antennae, this beetle is able to sense dead animals from a distance.
